CRICKET: The Indian star Sunil Manohar Gavaskar equalled Sir Donald
Bradman’s record of 29 Test hundreds and also equalled yet another world
record of most fifties (including centuries) of 64, held by Geoff
Boycott, he completed 8,000 runs, when on 104, to become the third
batsman in the world after Geoff Boycott (8,114) and Garfield Sobers
(8,032). At the end of the first innings of that match, Gavaskar had an
aggregate of 8,017 runs to his credit.
Gavaskar’s break-up of centuries are: vs West Indies 12, vs England
4, vs Australia 5, vs New Zealand 2, vs Pakistan 5 and vs Sri Lanka 1.
If a question is asked to name the top three batsmen one has seen in
cricket, the answer may well be Sir Donald Bradman, Sir Garfield Sobers
and Sunil Gavaskar.
Sir Donald Bradman of Australia played 52 Tests, had 80 innings with
10 not outs, scored 6,996 runs with 334 as highest. He hit 29 centuries
and his average was 99.94.
Bradman’s break-up of centuries: vs England 19, vs South Africa 4, vs
West Indies 2 and India 4.
Sobers played 93 Tests, had 160 innings with 21 not outs, scored
8,032 runs with 365 not out as his highest. He hit 26 hundreds and his
average was 57.38. In bowling, Sobers sent down 21,599 deliveries took
235 wickets conceding 7,999 runs for an average of 34.03.
