The National Delimitation Committee and the District Level
Delimitation Committees appointed to demarcate the wards in the Local
Government areas across the country will compile their reports according
to the number of wards in the LG areas and their boundaries by March 31,
Secretary to the Provincial Councils and Local Government Ministry
R.A.A.K. Ranawaka said.
He said the National Delimitation Committee and the District Level
Delimitation Committees are now perusing the proposals from the public,
recognised political parties and volunteer organisations in deciding on
the number of wards and its boundaries.
The members of these committees are due to meet political parties and
visit the relevant areas when considering the proposals they receive.
“The public, recognised political parties and civil organisations
made representations to the National Delimitation Committee and the
District Level Delimitation Committees till February 15 following the
public announcement calling for representations to consider their views
when demarcating wards”, the Secretary said.
The demarcation of wards in Local Government areas is being done in
accordance with the Local Government Elections (Amendment) Bill, which
was passed in Parliament to enact changes to the Local Government
elections in the country to introduce a combination of the proportional
representation and the first past the post system when electing members
to Local Government bodies.
The committees are expected to submit their report on the number of
wards, the boundaries and a name for the ward when they finalise
recommendations to the Provincial Councils and Local Government Ministry
in keeping with the population, geographical differences and other
social and development activities in the Local Government bodies.
“The Ministry hopes to finalise the demarcation of wards in Local
Government areas by May 31, this year on receipt of the committee
report”, Ranawaka said. |
