In a match mostly dominated by the batsmen of either side the 79th
'Battle Of The Saints" cricket encounter between St.Joseph's and
St.Peter's ended in a draw at the P.Sara Oval yesterday.
The Joes were set a difficult target of 209 runs to get in 27 overs
and when play was called off due to bad light with two more overs to be
bowled the Josephians were 138 for 5 wickets in 24.2 overs.Priyamal
Perera top scored for the Joes in their second innings with a 37 ball 52
with the aid of seven fours and one six.
The first innings of both schools were restricted to 60 overs per
side and the Peterites batting first on the first day scored 236 for 9
in their 60 overs. The Joes in reply were 180 for 2 overnight and went
on to make 281 for 8 wickets in their 60 overs. The Joes top order
batting spearheaded by a well struck 127 by wicket keeper Sadeera
Samarawickrema utilising 153 deliveries studded with 14 fours and a six
. Samarawickrema was engaged in a 110 run stand for the third wicket
with skipper Sachin Hewawasam (53), Earlier opener Dylan Fernandopulle
put on 92 runs for the second wicket with Samarawickrema in the Joes
final tally of 281 for 8.
The Peterites going in for the second time without any restrictions
of overs was given a rousing start by Shasheen Fernando (81) who failed
to score in the first innings. Fernando and Jason Buuiltjens (56) took
the Peterites to 89 without being separated, followed by another 64 by
one drop bat Janith Liyanage who also scored a resourceful 70 in the
first innings the Peterites were showing signs of going for quick runs.
But Fabian Fernando struck four useful blows to halt the marauding
Peterites when they declared their innings at 253 for 7 , leaving the
Joes to get 209 in 27 overs. Fabian Fernando had the figures of 4 for 45
in 9.5 overs.
