Flashback: Brian Lara of West Indies and Sanath Jayasuriya of Sri
Lanka. Now these two names sound big in international cricket.
Sanath Jayasuriya made 340 runs in August 1997 and he was batting
against India at the R. Premadasa Stadium and in recent times Lara made
400 not out to get hold of the World Batting record.
When Sri Lanka played against India in tat memorable match, India
first batted and made 537 for 8 wickets declared in their first innings.
It looked a sizeable score, but Sanath Jayasuriya and Roshan Mahanama
who opened batting in that match, had other ideas and provided a treat
for the spectators. The first wicket - that of Marvan Atapattu fell at
39 and Atapattu made 26. Then came the fireworks with Sanath Jayasuriya
and Roshan Mahanama paying scant respect for the Indian bowlers. At that
time Jayasuriya was chasing Lara's record of 375, but Jayasuriya missed
out on that record as he was out for 340.
Though no record came Jayasuriya's way that time, he and Mahanama
were involved in a right-royal partnership of 576 runs for the second
wicket and Sri Lanka were able to post a huge total of 952 runs in 1,126
minutes off 271 overs. While Jayasuriya made 340 runs, Mahanama's
contribution was 225.
India who batted first, made 537 for 8 wickets declared Sri Lanka's
scoreboard on that historic day read:
