Choral presentation for Holy Week

The annual Holy Week choral presentation of sacred songs presented by St. Cecelia's Choir of St. Joseph's College, Colombo 10 will be held at 6.30 p.m. on Monday, March 25 in the school chapel, the organisers said. The program of hymns, anthems and choruses will feature short scripture passages with audio-visual clips.

The presentation will take one through the whole gamut of Christ's final days and hours including His defiant entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday, the poignant Last Supper, the tragic betrayal, the cruel torture, the ascent to Calvary, the crucifixiom, courageous death, burial and the glorious resurrection, the organisers said.

Such dramatic scenes will bring the best in the expanded Josephian choir of 126 voices, who have earned much acclaim from thousands in the Holy Land and in Rome including plaudits from the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem and Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI.

The uniqueness of the Josephain choral outfit in its Bel Canto quality, flamboyant style, homogenous balance and the versatility to handle a diverse genre with equal finesse. The program will include Pueri Hebreorum, Lauda Jerusalem, Ave Verum Corpus, Gethsamane. On a hill far away, Adoramus Te Christe, Softly and Tenderly, Nearer my God, Kalvariye, Lacrimosa, Miserere, Regina Coeli Laetare and Worthy is the Lamb.

The melodic and mellow voices of the 70-strong choir of Good Shepherd Convent, Kotahena will provide another facet to the evening's presentation.Over 200 choristers will raise their hearts and voices to sing Handel's Hallelujah chorus, the organisers said.

Entrance is free.
