Seetha Devi SC emerge champs in Singapore
by S.M. Jiffrey Abdeen – Kandy Sports Corr.
Seetha Devi Sports Club, Kandy a virtually Sri Lankan national outfit
at hockey, repeated their success of last year and brought honour to the
country when they emerged Cup Champions at the 19th Annual Singapore
Sixes Hockey Championship organised by the Singapore Cricket Club.
Seetha Devi beat Cairns Sapphires Sports Club Australia 2-0 in the
finals played at Padang Singapore last week. At half-time there was no
scoring.
It was centre-half Chathurika who breached their opponents defence
early in the first with a scorching drive. Two minutes later prolific
scorer of the tournament centre forward Buddhika Gunaratne dribbled her
way into the scoring zone and scored through a well directed hit.
With that the match ended with the Seetha Devi stickers emerging
champions for the second year in succession.
Seetha Devi Sports Club first participated in this championship in
2010 and finished runner-up and that was the first time a Sri Lankan
women hockey team had finished at that level.
They skipped the championship in 2011 due to domestic commitments. In
the semi-finals, Seetha Devi SC beat SRC ladies team 1-0 after a tense
battle and they scored the winning goal towards the end off the stick of
centre forward Chathurika Wijesuriya.
