A giant Vesak lantern with over 100 satellites, made by Gunasena
Kurukulasuriya, will be on display for the 42nd time during the Vesak
season at the SLTB Driving School premises, Galle road, Angulana
Junction, Katubedda.
Kurukulasuriya who had been conferred the Kalabhushana award, has
international acclaim for his creation which had been on display
internationally and islandwide for many decades.
The displaying of the giant lantern commenced from Ratmalana and
later in Borella Campbell Park, Seeduwa, near Kelanitissa power plant
and Bellanwila. The lantern was also displayed in Singapore.
This year's theme of the Vesak lantern is based on a Jathaka story
giving advice to parents whose children are of marriageable age.
Kurukulasuriya claims that the Vesak lantern with a height of 60 foot
is the largest made so far.
Around 12,000 electric bulbs will adorn the giant lantern, making it
a 'never to be missed' item this season. It will be on display from
Vesak Day.
