Medawachchiya-Madhu rail track opens on Tuesday
Sri Lanka Railways will open the Medawachchiya to Madhu segment of
the Medawachchiya-Thalaimannar rail track in the North on Tuesday.
The construction of the 106-kilometre Medawachchiya-Thalaimannar line
is carried out in two phases. The 43-kilometre Medawachchiya to Madhu
segment was laid under the first phase at a cost of US$ 81.3 million.
The Medawachchiya to Madhu train service will be fully operational
for the annual Madhu Church Festival which takes place in August.
Superintendent of Railways B.A.P. Ariyaratna has said construction of
the second phase, to extend the rail track up to Thalaimannar at a cost
of US$ 149 million, has now commenced and is expected to be completed by
September.
The Indian Railway Construction Company Ltd. is responsible for the
construction work of both stages of the project which is being financed
under a US$ 425 million credit facility from India.
