Special allowance for coconut growers

A special allowance would be paid to coconut growers who use carbonic
manure for their coconut trees in the near future. Accordingly, for a
tree bearing nuts is paid Rs. 100 and other coconut tree is paid Rs. 50
For a coconut seedling is paid Rs. 25
This novel subsidy scheme is introduced to encourage coconut growers
towards the use of carbonic manure instead of chemical fertilisers as it
has been revealed that excessive use of chemical fertilisers for a long
period of time has resulted in infertility in soil .
EPC strengthens relations

The Eastern Provincial Council (EPC) has strengthened coordination
and relations between the Provincial, District and Divisional
Administrations in the Eastern Province recently.
The first meeting in this regard was presided over by EPC Chief
Minister Najeeb Abdul Majeed with the participation of senior EPC
Officials, Government Agents and Divisional Secretaries. It was held in
Trincomalee.Implementation issues and a better mechanism for future
development programs and administrative functions were discussed at the
meeting. The meeting would be conducted on a bi-annual basis.
It was facilitated by EPC Chief Secretary D.M. Sarath Abegunawardena.
Scholarship exam results to be released soon

The results of the Grade five scholarship examination 2013 will be
released during the first week of October by the Department of
Examinations.
The examination was held on August 25 islandwide and 249,396 Sinhala
medium students and 80,329 Tamil medium students sat for the
examination, said President, School Principals' Association of
Kurunegala District W.M. Somapala, at a meeting of school heads of the
North Western Province in Kurunegala recently.
Mosquito Control Week from Oct 7-13

The Health Ministry has declared the period from October 7 to 13 as
National Mosquito Control Week, a Ministry spokesman told the Sunday
Observer. The Week is aimed at controlling the mosquito density to keep
dengue and other diseases spread by mosquitoes in check, he said.
The number of dengue patients rose during January to March and from
October to December last year. The number of dengue cases and deaths
increase after the rainy season, he said.
State Literary Awards tomorrow
The State Literary Awards Ceremony 2013, held to honour and
felicitate those whose creative literature contribute towards the
promotion of the literary art in Sri Lanka, will be held tomorrow at
2.30 pm at the BMICH under the patronage of Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa and
with the participation of Culture and Arts Minister T.B. Ekanayaka.

The introduction and registration for the Art of Living Happiness
Program of Sri Sri Ravi Shankar will be conducted by the chief disciple
of Ravi Shankar, Ganesji and Gowriji at the Kingston College
International, Mutwal branch, Colombo 15 on Sunday October 6 at 6.00
p.m.
The practice sessions will be held from October 7 - 9 from 6.00 p.m.
to 9.00 p.m.

The Annual General Meeting of the Old Boys' Association of
St.Aloysius College, Galle (Colombo branch) will be held for the 78th
successive year today, at Hotel Sapphire, Galle Road, Wellawatte. The
meeting which will commence at 10.00 a.m. will be followed by a
fellowship and lunch.
Leukaemia: Bone marrow transplant
Eight-year-old Rikasa is suffering from leukemia and treatment is
available only at Meenatchy Mission Hospital, Madurai, India. The cost
for treatment is estimated to Rs.25 lakhs for a bone-marrow transplant.
