Chandran Rutnam’s Mathew makes headway
Sri Lankan film-maker Chandran Rutnam made
headway in the international film world when his film A Common Man
which had Sir Ben Kingsley playing the lead, won him the award for
best Director at the Madrid International Film Festival. On July 15,
I had the pleasure of sitting down to interview this veteran in the
Lankan film industry about his next flick for the big screen.

The enigmatic Kafka and his continuing influence
Recently, I was invited as the keynote speaker
at a conference on Asian cinema held in Germany. Before the
conference, I toured many adjacent countries including Austria, the
Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovakia. It is evident that a powerful
sense of history figures prominently in the experience in all these
countries inflecting all facets of their being. In Prague I was able
to stand in front of the house where the acclaimed writer Franz
Kafka was born and soak in the atmosphere.

Kuchipudi, the drama-based Indian classical dance
Kuchipudi is a classical drama based dance of
Telugu Desha. The present day Andhra Pradesh was earlier called
Telugu Desha. The northern border of Tamil Nadu is Andhra Pradesh,
which has its own classical dance form, called Kuchipudi. Kuchipudi
originated in the village Kuchipudi in the Krishna district of
Andhra Pradesh, near the Bay of Bengal. And later this dance form
acquired the name of the village Kuchipudi where it originated.
Initially, it pertained to a particular caste only.
