Priyamal and Aravinda bowl Joes to four run win

Priyamal Perera (6 for 54) and Aravinda Arukgoda (3 for 70) bowled St. Joseph’s to their first win for the season beating D.S. Senanayake by 4 runs in an exciting school cricket match played at Darley Road yesterday.

D.S. Senanayake who had to get 238 runs to win with ample time and overs remaining were cruising along at one stage at 4 for 222 with the top three batsmen Thimira Vidyasekera (38), Kaveen Bandara (68) and Sifran Muthalif (63) providing them the ideal platform for a win. But with the dismissal of Muthalif who was shaping well for a big score was bowled by Akurugoda the rot set in and there after the match took a dramatic turn tilting towards the Joes.

With the score reading 222 DSSC lost three quick wickets at the same score. Priyamal Perera and Arukgoda did most of the damage and inserted the pressure and DSSC never recovered there after.

But with the last pair Geeth Perera and Raveen de Silva in DSSC still had a chance of pulling the match in their favour needing 4 runs with 2.2 overs to spare , but Geeth Perera going for the second run was run out, beaten by an accurate throw by Priyamal Perera with five runs short for a win. Priyamal Perera produced a fine all-round effort in all three department of the match.

Earlier St. Joseph’s were all out for 167 in the first Innings and scored 204 in their second innings with skipper Dylan Fernandopulle (50) and Priyamal Perera excelling with the bat as well with a well compiled 70. Left arm paceman Binura fernando had the best figures of 5 for 50 and 5 for 51 in both innings for D.S. Senanayake.

Thanuja 4 for 29, Aravinda Arukgoda 3 for 36Yashan Samarasekera 2 for 8) and 233 (Thimira Vidyasekera 38, Kaveen Bandara 68, Sifran Muthalif 63, Duleeka Brahammanage 18, Akila Inham 19, Priyamal Perera 6 for 54, Aravinda Arukgoda 3 for 70).

Wesley take major honours

At Campbell Park: Wesley took first innings lead over St. Anthony’s Katugasthota in their drawn school cricket encounter. The Antonians who were shot out for 99 in their first innings did well to get 235 for 7 in their second innings with N. Gunasinghe 66, D. Panditharatne 76, among the top scorerers.

Wesley scored 175 after bring 133 for 4 overnight.

Isipathana to the fore

At Maradana: Isipathana took first Innings points over Zahira College in their drawn school cricket match played at Maradana yesterday.

In reply to Isipathana’s first innings score of 271 ,Zahira fell 11 runs short of a first innings win.

Isipathana 271 (Sachin Jayasuriya 108. S. Ushan 52, Ramzan Raifudeen 5 for 118) and 119 for 4 at close (Sachin Jjayasuriya 23, Torry Thabrew 55 n.o, P. Maduwantha 19 n.o).

Zahira 82 for 4 overnight 260 (Mohammed Arshad 22, Mohammed Salman 19 n.o, Shehan Weerasinghe 65, Kelum Bastiansz 5 for 59, Chamara Dissanayake 3 for 59, Kumudu Perera 2 for 40).
