Football Club), CCC (Colombo Cricket Club) and the Queens Club (Hockey)
will be celebrating their 150th anniversary this year and plans have
been made to mark the occasion on a grand scale.
Started as the Colombo Club on the Galle Face Green by the British in
the middle of the 19th century, it was subsequently relocated to
establish its permanent home in Maitland Crescent, Colombo 7.
Horse Racing, Cricket, Football and Rowing were the earliest sport
activities for the members.
Eventually in 1959, the Colombo Cricket Club (CCC), the Colombo
Hockey and Football Club (CH&FC) and the Queen’s Tennis Club combined
under the name Colombo Gymkhana. Celebrating the glorious past of the
Colombo Gymkhana Club where hundreds of members have benefited, the new
committee headed by Shiran Anthony (Chairman), comprising Russell
Kerkoven (Vice Chairman), Prashantha Wimalasena (Secretary), and Sarath
Ganegoda (Treasurer) and a team of efficient Ex-Comembers is set to
steer the club into the future with a renewed contemporary agenda and
