Bahrainis hold fresh protest to demand PM's resignation

Bahrainis have staged a fresh anti-regime demonstration in the capital, Manama, calling for the kingdomâ€(tm)s long-time prime minister to resign.The demonstrators said Prime Minister Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifaâ€(tm)s resignation will pave the way for the establishment of a democratically-elected government. Salman, who is an uncle of King Hamad, has been in his post since 1971.

They also called for an end to the dictatorship of the ruling Al Khalifa regime and sectarian measures taken against the countryâ€(tm)s Shia majority.The Friday protest comes a day after Bahraini forces attacked similar anti-regime demonstrations in Manama and nearby villages.

Several protesters were injured on Thursday after regime forces fired tear gas and live rounds to disperse the demonstrators, who were chanting slogans demanding the release of political prisoners and the fall of the ruling Al Khalifa family. Bahrainis have been staging demonstrations since mid-February 2011, demanding political reforms and a constitutional monarchy, a demand that later changed to an outright call for the ouster of the ruling Al Khalifa family following its brutal crackdown on popular protests.

Scores have been killed, many of them under torture while in custody, and thousands more detained since the popular uprising in Bahrain began. Protesters say they will continue holding anti-regime demonstrations until their demands for the establishment of a democratically-elected government and an end to rights violations are met. In July, Bahrain passed a law banning protest rallies and gatherings in Manama.
