Construction work on Kataragama- Matara rail track begins

Construction work on the first phase of the proposed Matara-Kataragama new rail-road from Matara to Beliatta will be inaugurated tomorrow at 3 p.m. at Beliatta.

According to Director attached to Matara-Kataragama New Rail-Road Construction Project V. Amaratunga, it is expected to be completed by 2015. New railway stations are to be constructed at Kekanadura, Babarenda, Wavurukannala and Beliatta and sub stations too would be erected at Piladuwa and Weherahena.

The Sri Lanka's longest railway tunnel which will be of over 600 meters in length will also be constructed at Kekanadura on this rail-way extension line he said.

The estimated cost of the first phase of the Matara-Kataragama

railway from Matara to Beliatte is Dollars 272 million. People's Republic of China is funding the Project Director V. Amaratunga said.
