Parents want same school
by M.U.M. Sanoon - Puttalam Cor.
Poor Fishermen of Vettalai village adjacent to Puttalam town say that
their children should continue their studies in their own school.
If you compel them to seek admission to the faraway schools, they
would stop their education. Puttalam Assenkudhoos Muslim Vidyalaya is
the only school for the fishing folks of Vettalai an adjacent rural area
of Puttalam town and more than four decades this school had classes up
to G.C.E. Ordinary Level, although it is a school of backward fishing
folks.
As a result of making this school a primary school the poor students
have been compelled to seek permission for Gr. 6 at Puttalam Zahira
College or Fathima Muslim Girls School, both are kilo meters away from
Vettalai village.
The parents of the students have appealed to the authorities of the
North Western Province to leave their children to continue their studies
from the same school where they studied till Gr. 5.
The parents have pointed out that both schools - Zahira College and
Fathima Muslim Girl's College - are very far away from Vettalai and
there are no public transport facilities in this area.
The day-to-day income of the fishing folks prevents them from
arranging three-wheelers or other mode of transport for their children
to attend school in time.
The parents say that the only alternative for their children is to
stop their education which is unbecoming for a modern society.
