Extension of service for lecturers
by Lakshmi Parasuraman
The Cabinet has approved the proposal to extend the retirement age of
university lecturers to 70 years. Higher Education Ministry, Secretary,
Dr. Sunil Jayantha Navaratne said. At present, the retirement age for
university lecturers is 65. Lecturers whose services are considered
essential by the university administration will be given five more years
on a contract basis.
As there is a dearth of lecturers, the decision to extend their
services will be a boost to university education.
During the contract period lecturers are prohibited to hold
administrative positions such as Chancellor, Vice Chancellor or Head of
Department. The lecturer's career record during the last three years
prior to the date of retirement and dedicated service will be considered
to extend their services.
The possibility of re-employing retired lecturers is being explored
by the University Grants Commission.
