He has once again excelled at the ITO evaluation and assessment
seminar and exam of the IAAF concluded on 20 October in London. 'Waidya'
is one of the few ITOs from all over the world to qualify as an ITO from
the inception of the IAAF Technical Officials Education & Certification
system in 2001 and remain in the elite panel.
The course is held every four years and the existing panel of ITOs
have to face the examinations along with newcomers. Always nearly one
third of the existing panel fail to qualify and new comers take their
place. This time, too, 17 members of the existing panel of 46 failed to
qualify for the next ITO panel. Waidyatilaka has always performed well
and retained his place through out.
In 2009 Asia had 3 ITOs with Waidya as usual on top. This time one
ITO failed to come upto the mark and 3 new ITOs were appointed.
Therefore, Asia now has 5 ITOs. They are P.H.D. Waidyatilaka (Sri
Lanka), Kwan Kee (Hong Kong), Vadim Nigmatov (Tajikistan), Shen Chunde
(China) and Yukio Seki (Japan). Both Shen Chunde and Yukio Seki are
members of the IAAF Technical Committee.
Waidyatilaka is also an ITO of the International Paralympics
Committee (IPC).
'Waidya' is an old boy of Richmond College and a former Public
Schools and University hurdles champion.
