Sri Lanka commemorated National Safety Day
Sri Lanka commemorated the 7th anniversary of National Safety Day,
Thursday (Dec.26). The national event on the theme “Line up to eradicate
Disasters” organized by the Ministry of Disater Mangement in
collaboration with the Disaster Managemrnt Centre and the Kalutara
District Secretariat was held at the Kalutara District Secretariat
premises under the patronage of Prime Minister D. M. Jayaratne.
A two-minute silence was observed from 9:25 a.m. to 9:27 a.m. to
remember the victims of the Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004.
A new hotline 117 in operation round the clock, for the public to
convey information related to natural disaster was launched by the Prime
Minister at the ceremony Disaster Management Minister Mahinda Amaraweera
said that the people can report any type of disaster including floods,
landslides, cyclonic conditions, droughts as well as road accidents in
any area that require immediate relief through this hotline. The
Disaster Management Centre will in turn inform the respective District
Disaster Management Units to assist them within a short time.
