Measures to protect bathing spots along coast

Marine protection authorities point out that public bathing spots along the coastline need to be protected to prevent them from becoming unsuitable for human use. Over-population of the coast and the developing hotel industry in these areas pose a threat to the coastal environment, leading to pollution and the water becoming unsuitable for bathing.

Under the instructions of Environment Minister Susil Premajayantha, the Marine Environment Protection Authority has taken steps to upgrade all popular bathing spots along the coast, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Environment said.

These areas will be developed to international standard, providing protection to the people and the environment.

Under the new program, water testing will be carried out monthly at identified locations.

More tests will be done to identify pollutants, if any, and action will be taken accordingly to reduce their inflow to the sea.

Awareness programs will also be conducted for people using the coastal areas for recreation and livelihood. Infrastructure facilities for visitors will be set up at popular sea bathing destinations.
