Parliament employees should work with more dedication - Deputy Speaker

Deputy Speaker Chandima Weerakkody said Parliament employees should dedicate themselves to turn Parliament into a more people' friendly institution.

He made these remarks at a ceremony organised by the Parliament employees to commence work for the year 2014.

The Deputy Speaker said Parliament is dependent on public funds so that it is an institution which belongs to 21 million people in this country. Therefore due recognition should be given for those who come to visit Parliament. Under the leadership of Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa series of measures were taken over the past few years to bridge the gap between the masses and the Parliament.

He said various provincial elections are scheduled to be held during the year 2014. Parliament is represented by a large number of political parties and they hold different political ideologies. Therefore Parliament employees should focus attention when they fulfill their responsibilities this year. Those who work at the country's most supreme institution should behave in an exemplary manner, he said.

The Deputy Speaker said the people are alert on the discipline and conduct of Parliament employees as well.

Therefore I believe everybody would act in a responsible manner to safeguard the dignity and decorum of Parliament.
