By Ranjan Anandappa
Kandy Sports Club went on a try scoring spree to the tune of 62
points (6 goals and 4 tries) to 6 points (One goal and a drop goal)
against Police SC in their Dialog 'A' Division League rugby encounter at
Police Park yesterday.
The law enforcement officers could not stop the marauding Kandyans
who scored almost at will with their powerful brand of play as their
forwards and the back division formed a lethal combination to drive the
Policemen into submission.
It was Police who opened scoring early in the first half through a
penalty, but Kandy struck back with their speedy three quarters in rapid
succession. Kandy displayed their superior quality of supportive play.
In most of their moves there was always someone at hand to continue the
move once a player was tackled.
Full back Thilina Wijesinghe opened scoring for the Kandy side when
he picked a gap and sped through to score. New Zealander Filifa'atanu
gave the them the extra points.
Kandy SC went on to plant four more tries in the first half which one
was goalled. Anurudha Willwara , scrum half Roshan Weeraratne and his
brother centre Gayan Weeraratne put the Kandy side on a strong footing
with the score reading 29-3 at the breather.
On resumption Kandy SC went on to score five more tries when Roshan
Kalhara crashed through to touch down and Filifa'atanu added the extra
points. After police's Lahiru Gurusinghe dropping a kick, Kandy's Roshan
and Gayan Weeraratne combined well to send over Lavanga Perera to score.
Thereafter Fazil Marija who also scored a try in the first half ,Uchita
Jayasuriya and Richmond Dharmapala scored for the winners.
