Coming to grips with Johnson’s Dictionary

Today lexicography or compiling of dictionaries has become a refined art. In our own country, there were a few lexicographers who rendered a yeoman service without the aid of modern technology. Prof G.P. Malalasekera and Dr E.W. Adikaram were pioneers in compiling English-Sinhala dictionaries. They are still being used by scholars.

Much has been written about the tragic death of the eight-year-old student of Ananda College, Colombo, who was apparently pinned against a wall by a ground roller he and a few of his friends were playing with. This tragedy could indeed have been prevented if a few precautionary steps had been taken.
