Kandy SC in 41-30 win

The defending Clifford Cup Champions Kandy Sports Club entered the semis, with an effortless win over the Police Sports Club in their Quarter final encounter played last evening at the Trinity College Rugby Stadium in Pallekelle.

The scores – Kandy Sports Club 41, Police Sports Club 30.

Now the victorious Kandy Sports Club ruggerites will be meeting the Havelocks Sports Club in the semifinals on Wednesday.

Both sides rung the changes and play ebbed and followed with the Kandy side extending the lead in the first half 19/15 - courtesy of two goals and a try, to a goal a try and a penalty.

It was the Kandy team who scored first in the seventh minute, when quick hands done the short side created room which number eight Nasima Samisoni utilized to great effect to score. Applying some old-fashioned grunt up from the Kandy side continued to shut down the Policemen in the first half. Any way some driving play by the Cops was rewarded in the 37th minute to score three points through a drop from Lahiru Gurusinghe.

Kandy Sports Club back after going for half time, showed a change, was grater to hang onto the ball, they launched a string of pic-and-goes at the Cops line and the defence, but the Policemen never ever cracked. So, ruggertes form both teams dished out a fast superb game of rugby, this may be the best match the Cops have played. Believe it or not, there was only nine penalties in the entire game.

Both teams, last evening had ample ball coming their way from the rucks, mauls and in the loose, both sides proved themselves far superior with their pluck display, and played very confidentially and paced out the game. Kandy Sports Club, had to put everything what they had to 0 earn their victory. Their forwards played ferociously and their three-quarters ran the ball well and were able to score seven tries against four. On many a occasion the Policemen tried their best. It would have been more purposeful if they could have made there attempts productive.

For Kandy - David Samisoni and Lavanga Perera scored two each, Oshan Perera, Damien Ratwatte and Vaeatangitau Sailoasi scored one each, Roshan Weerarthne did the kicking.

Police scoring was done by Lapana Menateau two, Apsais Naralevu, Udara Chanaka and the kick at goal was by Lapana Menateau and the drop coming from Lahiru Gurusinghe.

Kandy Sports Club scored three goals, and four tries against two goals, two tries a penalty and a drop goal.
