Abdul Qadir - star in Pakistan's innings and 87 runs win over
England
By A.C. De Silva
FLASHBACK.... To those who don't know him, especially to those from
outside the subcontinent, he is something of a mystery man. Abdul Qadir
is indeed one of a kind in modern cricket. When he is good he's
sustandingly fine. When he's not, he seems as mediocre as mediocre can
be. But that is all too rare.

Abdul Qadir – fine figures of 9 for 56 and 4 for 54 that
helped Pakistan to beat England by an innings and 87 runs.
He also batted well to make 38 runs. |
Qadir has been at his very best when he was playing in the World Cup
and at the time of his playing days against England during the time when
Pakistan had their encounters.

Mudasser Nazar a fine knock of 120 that helped Pakistan to
make 392 and go for innings win over England. |

Wasim Akram – made a fine knock of 40 that helped Pakistan
to make 392. |

Javed Miandad – a fine knock of 65 runs that helped Pakistan
to make 392 runs. |
Came the clashes against England in late November 1987 in Lahore -
November 25 to 28 and Pakistan went on to win the Lahore clash by an
innings and 87 runs with a day and half to spare.
On a wicket which helped the spinners, Pakistan had bowled England
out for 175 after it had won the toss and decided to bat.
England was shattered by the spin of the leg-spinner Abdul Qadir who
finished with career-best figures of 9 for 56 in the first innings and
followed it up with 4 for 45 in the second innings. When Qadir was
introduced after only eleven overs, with England score on 18, the
visitors lost their first wicket - that of Gooch for 12, as he was
unable to spot the flipper and was bowled with the score on 22.
From 22 for 1, England slid to 44 for 4, losing Robinson, Gatting and
Athoy in quick succession. Whereas only 50 runs came in the pre-lunch
session, England did better in the second, adding 91 runs between lunch
and tea losing another four wickets-that of Caoel, DeFreitas, Emburey
and Broad the resistance coming only from Broad who managed to score 41,
the highest of the innings.
Qadir's magic
Qadir by then had taken seven of the eight wickets, conceding only 26
runs in 23 overs. The best stand of the innings came from Foster and
French who put on 57 runs for the ninth wicket with the last wicket
adding another 24 runs. Foster made 39 and French remained 38 not out.
All talk about the wicket being nasty and unfit for the Test as
implied by the England captain Mike Gatting was cast away with Pakistan
scoring 392 in reply. After Mudassar Nazar (120) and Rameez Raja (35)
had put on 71 for the first wicket, Pakistan lost two quick wickets to
Emburey as Rameez and Salim Malik were both bowled off successive
deliveries, Javed Miandad saved the hat-trick.
From 127 for two at lunch, Pakistan took the score to 213 before it
lost the third wicket, that of the captain Miandad for 65 as he was
caught by Gooch off Cook.
Mudassar and Miandad added 142 runs. Mudassar, then 88, went on to
score his tenth Test century with the help of 15 fours. He was
eventually out for 120, falling leg before to Foster after tea but not
before he had added another useful 59 runs for the fourth wicket.
From 227 at tea, Pakistan finished at 277 for 4 and led England by
102 runs when stumps were drawn on the second day.
Ijaz Ahmed, 27 overnight, went on to make 44 on the third day before
being bowled by Fester and Wasim Akram made a brrezy 40 with the help of
two sixes and three fours.
Disaster again
Trailing by 217 runs England began disastrously, losing four wickets
for 43 runs to finish the third day's play at 47 for 4. England added
another 83 runs to their overnight score of 47 for 4 and they were all
out for 130 after lunch. Emburey was the highest scorer as he remained
unbeaten on 38.
There were controversies regarding various umpires decisions, but one
cannot take away the merits of Qadir who finished the Test taking 13
wickets for 101 runs for Pakistan in the match.
