Over 3,000 teacher trainees to be recruited this year

The Ministry of Education has made arrangements to recruit 3,000 teacher trainees who are qualified from National Colleges of Education islandwide in June.

The Minister Bandula Gunawardena has confirmed this decision and these newly-recruited teacher trainees would be appointed to remote schools as there is a severe dearth in many remote schools in the country.

A senior Zonal Director of Education in Kurunegala said that around 3,500 school teachers go on retirement annually and a considerable number of experienced teachers go abroad for lucrative jobs.

This trend has badly affected the educational set-up within the country, he said.
