Errant traders nabbed

Measurement Standards and Services Department has collected a record Rs. 4.1 million by way of court fines from those who used fake measurements and weights during raids and sudden inspections conducted in the country.

According to the Director, Pemasiri Kumara attached to Measurement Standards and Services Department the totality of mobile raids and inspections made during the period concerned was 14322.

The number of cases filed in courts against those who used false measurements and weighing equipment were 2874.

Out of them 2045 cases were settled by courts and 829 cases are pending he said.

Selling and display for sale short weight loaves of bread ,use of unlicensed weighing machines and scales, sale of pre packed commodities and the use of fake and false weights and measurements were charges framed against these offenders Director, Pemasiri Kumara stated.

Measurement Standards and Services Department has currently enhanced these sudden raids and mobile inspections throughout the island in order to curb these frauds, corruptions and malpractices he said.
