Bomb explodes injuring five

At least five people sustained serious injuries when an unidentified person hurled a grenade at a group of people attending a domestic function in Nawandagala area in Elpitiya on Friday night, the police said.

According to police an army solider who had thrown a party to four of his friends at his residence. When they were enjoying another team of youth who happened to pass in front of the house had hooted at the residents, Police Spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana said.

The next moment the soldier's mother who was inside the house had heard a loud explosion outside. She rushed out to find the five men including her son lying on the floor covered in blood. The injured were rushed to Elpitiya Base Hospital and were later transferred to Karapitiya Teaching Hospital for further treatments. Elpitiya Police arrested four men in connection with the bomb blast.

The cause of the attack is yet to be ascertained.
