Sri Lanka's chances of remaining in the top plummetted when they were
comprehensively beaten by Hong Kong by 41 points (six tries, four
conversion, one penalty) to 10 (one goal, one penalty) in the second
Asian Five Nations fifteen a side rugby encounter played at the Race
Course grounds under light yesterday.
Sri Lanka after losing to Korea (59-3) fared better when they went
down meekly to a superior outfit Hong Kong dominated play from the
outset driving into rucks and mauls leaving the Lankans magnificent
defending.
Sri Lankans lacked the profession and Hong Kong took advantage of the
blunders. Their swift three-quarter line and the indomitable set of
forwards combined to rattle the Lankans who hardly invaded the visitors
‘25'.
The visitors opened scoring from a penalty which fly half Christopher
Mcadum slot over from 25 inches.
Hong Kong then missed two scoring opportunities first off a line-out
which they could not convert into points due to the Sri Lankans’ defence.

But in the 10th minute, Hong Kong scored their first try off a push
when prop Honsuom Lion fell over and fly half Christoper Mcadum gave the
extra points.
With the Sri Lankans’ resistance gradually preceding Hong Kong went
onto plant three more tries which Mcadum added the extra points for the
tries scored by full back Thamas Mccoll.

The foreign players, who were down to represent Sri Lanka did not
take the field.
On recognition the Lankans did well to restrict the scoring but what
the penetrative qualities to put the pressure on the visitors and score.
The Lankans had some consolation during mid second half, when Nuwan
Hettiarachchi fired over 30-metre penalty.
Earlier, Hong Kong scored two tries, skipper and flanker Nicholas
Hewson and Nicholas Wheatley.
During the dying stages of the game, Danushka Ranjan scored the
solitary try for Sri Lanka when he crashed through the Hong Kong defence
to touch down under the post and Nuwan Hettiarachchi added the extra
points. |
