Richard Hadlee takes Kiwis to victory over Australia

GREAT WIN FOR KIWIS: New Zealand's first series victory against Australia was well-deserved and the only surprise was that it wasn't a clean sweep. The Kiwis won easily in Brisbane, controlled the match for the first four days in Sydney, before Coney's insipid captaincy on the last day let Australia into the match and then dominated the proceedings in the final Test in Perth.

Richard Hadlee – a fine performance with the ball – 5 for 65 in the first innings and 6 for 90 in the second innings. Australia were out for 203 and 259.

The final Test in Perth had Australia making 203 and 259 in the first and second innings respectively, while New Zealand made 299 in their first innings and won by six wickets, making 168 for 4 wickets in their chase for victory.

Kiwi Richard Hadlee was named Man of the Match in the Perth Test and the Man of the Series and in reflection he really was the difference between the teams. It was a wonderful match for Hadlee whose figures in the Perth Test was 5 for 65 off 26.5 overs with six maidens in the first innings and 6 for 90 in 30 overs with 11 maidens in the second innings.

Hadlee's 33 wickets in three Tests was a testimony to this and a victory to skill, application and the ability to adapt to different types of wickets.

Uncanny bowling by Hadlee

Martin Crowe of New Zealand made 71 in first innings total of 299.

Hadlee from his 12-pace approach seldom bowled above medium pace and relied on movement through the air and off the pitch and clever variation of pace and an uncanny ability to spot the weakness of each batsman and hammer away until the batsman cracked.

Hadlee was an inspiration to watch and to much for the Australians. At Perth he took advantage of the newly laid pitch and always looked like controlling the Australians batsmen to a score that would be obtainable.

Really, it wasn't ideal for cricket, the pitch that the match was played on, but the whole square had been relaid and the wicket was generally uneven and played at inconsistent heights throughout.

For the Australians David Boon (50) and Alan Border (83) batted best in their second innings total of 259. New Zealand also had in Chatfield - another bowler whose experience and style was ideally suited to take advantage of such a pitch.

He gave good support to Hadlee. While Hadlee was the dominating factor in the New Zealand team, the opening pair of batsmen - Edgar and Wright, were highly effective.

They got a good start and their lowest partnership was 36. In the first innings Edgar made 74, while M.D. Crowe made 71 in the total of 299. Martin Crowe clearly displayed his growing maturity as he piloted his team to victory.

He made the top score of 71 in total of 299 in the first innings for New Zealand.
