Six arrested in Kattankudy violence

After a relatively calm and quiet post-election period, Police on
Saturday arrested six people in Kattankudy on election-related violence
that broke out on Friday(21) night when supporters of the UPFA national
list MP, A.H.M. Hisbulla, attacked supporters of the Sri Lanka Muslim
Congress (SLMC), police said.
Police spokesman, ASP Ruwan Gunasekara told the Sunday Observer,
Kattankudy Police received three complaints from the SLMC supporters
about an assault, a threatening incident and about damaging glasses of a
shop an act of mischief after the incident that broke out on Friday
evening.
“The incidents had taken place around 7 pm on Friday,” ASP Gunasekara
said. Three people were admitted to the Batticaloa hospital with minor
injuries after being allegedly assaulted by a group of Hisbulla
supporters, he said. According to other sources, the incident has
occurred when the supporters of MP elect Hisbulla started celebrating
his appointment by lighting firecrackers. |
