German aid focus on tech, training

German Training Institute opens in Kilinochchi :

The newly opened Sri Lanka German Training Institute in Kilinochchi has received applications from young people around the country. “A 25% of the applicants are women,” German Ambassador Juergen Morhard said.

The establishment of the Sri Lanka-German Training Institute (SLGTI), a landmark project was initiated by the German Development Cooperation (GIZ) in partnership with the Government of Sri Lanka.

SLGTI will function under the purview of the National Apprentice Industrial and Training Authority of Sri Lanka (NAITA).

It is recognized as a national level training institute with equity of access for all citizens of Sri Lanka, regardless of ethnicity or religion. The centre as a common meeting point will facilitate the development of a mutual understanding and appreciation among students about the diverse cultural heritage of Sri Lanka.

Ambassador Morhard said it offers high quality vocational training in sectors of automobile technology, construction technology, food processing technology, mechanical engineering and electrical and electronic technology. “It will provide the best opportunity not only for youth in the Northern and Eastern regions but also for youth from other parts of the island. I hope these projects will help youth with industry-specific knowledge and market oriented skills,” he said at his farewell in Colombo on Thursday.

The Ambassador said that he has been the ‘German Brand Ambassador’ in Sri Lanka over the past four years. “It has been an absolute pleasure to do so. I am confident that this initiative will carry on, improving German brand awareness in the years to come.”

Germany is a one of the major export markets for Sri Lanka. “Sri Lankan exporters can expand their market presence in Germany by actively participating in trade fairs and events. They should meet their competitors and customers.”

The event also coincided with the relaunch of ‘Top German Brands in Sri Lanka’- a brand awareness campaign of the German Embassy in Colombo.

During his time Ambassador Morhard took measures to raise the awareness of German business presence and brands in Sri Lanka. This initiative of a marketing campaign has culminated in the launching of the 4th edition of the ‘Top German Brands in Sri Lanka’ logo and flyers. The new version is on display at the SLGTI in Kilinochchi. Minister for Development Strategies and International Trade, Malik Samarawickrema was the chief guest.
