Jail guard beaten up

Investigations have commenced into an assault on a jail guard attached to the Magazine Prison. He was abducted and beaten by an unidentified group and abandoned him on the road near the prison. The jail guard is being treated at the National Hospital.

The Prisons' media spokesperson, Superintendent Upul Deniya said investigations have been launched into the matter. "The incident took place on Friday evening and he has been admitted to the National Hospital. He has not sustained major injuries."

"We have handed over the investigations to the police. We believe that this has a connection with the inmates.

They had beaten him saying not to work against dealings in drugs or other related substances carried out within the prison," he said.

Speaking to the Sunday Observer, a high ranking official confirmed that the jail guard was actively involved in curbing the drug menace and was working with the anti-narcotics unit.
