EFFICIENCY GOALS FOR POLICE
‘KPIs’ to be introduced next year:
By Anurangi Singh
The
Sri Lanka Police is to implement the KPI (Key Performance Indicator)
system to streamline operations and evaluate the performance of the
Department.
After implementation, the KPIs will be the key factor determining
performance assessments and promotions in the Police service, at all
levels, informed sources of the Ministry of Law and Order said.
Under the new system, the Ministry will assess quality, efficiency
and the productivity of Police officers, on a yearly basis, and rank
them accordingly.
A senior ministry spokesman said the KPI system and transparent
performance assessment system would drive a dramatic change in the
quality of the Police service. The Ministry, he said, is in the process
of studying the KPI implementation systems in the private sector.
Law and Order Minister Sagala Ratnayaka told the Sunday Observer that
the Sri Lanka Police would implement the KPI system from next year.
KPI is a popular performance assessment system widely used in the
private sector.
Earlier this year, the government decided to implement the same
system in State owned enterprises (SOEs) to streamline operations and
increase efficiency.
The government announced that State enterprises meeting the annual
KPI targets would be recognised and duly rewarded. At the same time,
fresh targets would be set for them, in a fully transparent manner, with
a strong focus on their work-load and output.
Several countries, such as Malaysia, Singapore, South Africa and
Canada have already implemented the KPI system, successfully, in the
government sector. |
