Winner: Value of leisure
It is said that “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.” This
means that people should not only work, but should also have fun and
play. The present day is modernised and industrialised. Therefore,
people have become like machines. Globalisation has created many job
opportunities. So people work not only during day time, but also have to
work night shifts. This has caused many social problems. Parents don’t
spend time with their children because of busy lifestyles.
Therefore, children don’t receive parental care, love and affection
which causes them to follow the wrong path. As students, most of our
childhood is spent attending school and devoting time to studies which
is a good thing. But there should be a time set aside also for play,
sport and relaxation.

Winner: Our Solar System
We live in a planet. It is called Earth. It is the only living planet
in the solar system. The Earth goes around the Sun with seven other
planets. They are Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and
Neptune. Mercury is the planet nearest to the Sun. Neptune is the planet
farthest from the Sun. The biggest planet is Jupiter. Saturn has
beautiful rings around it. Earth is between Venus and Mars. The Sun and
the eight planets make up the solar system. The path of the planets
round the sun is called the orbit.

Winner: The origins of the English language
The English language is spoken in many countries around the world.
Some use it as the first language and some use as the second language.
But how many of us actually think about it in terms of history? English
has its deepest roots in the Anglo-Frisian dialects spoken by West
Germanic people who migrated to Britain(nia) around the 5th - 7th
centuries AD. This evolved into what we call Old English. Old English
was originally written using a script called the ‘futhorc’, but this
later changed to a derivation of the Latin alphabet - almost exactly
what we use today.
Modern English essentially added new words because of both the
industrial era and the rise of the British Empire.
This is the type of English which is used nowadays.

Winner: Lost in the zoo
One day I went to the zoo with my family. First we went to see the
snakes and then we went to see the lions and tigers. I wanted to have a
closer look at the tigers. I went closer to the tiger’s cage. The tiger
roared and she looked scary. I looked around for my family but I
couldn’t find them. I went everywhere looking for them. My parents
realised that I was missing and they finally found me.

My untiring wish
It was a Sunday. I was playing the piano when my mother came and sat
near me. She was listening to my piano piece and enjoying it. After
sometime I finished my practice for that day. Suddenly she asked whether
I would like to have a guitar. I thought I was in the middle of a dream.
I wiped my eyes to see whether it was real or not. I couldn't believe my
eyes and I said “Yes” at once. From that day onwards every day and night
I have only one passion. It is to own a shiny Yamaha guitar. I dream of
playing it while singing my favourite lyrics. Now I pray to God wishing
for a guitar. Do you think my wish would come true?

My hero in chess
My hero is current world chess champion, Magnus Carlsen. He was born
in Norway on 30th November 1990. He started playing chess when he was
five-years-old. He didn’t pay much interest to it at the beginning.
Later, he wanted to defeat his elder sister and his father in chess.
Therefore he practiced a lot and got the interest.
At the age of 13, he became the world’s youngest Grand Master in
chess. In 2013, Carlsen beat the former world chess champion Garry
Kasparov’s record and became the highest rated chess player. He also
became the youngest world champion by defeating Vishwanathan Anand of
India in 2013. Carlsen defended his title in 2014 too. This November he
will be playing against Sergey Karjakin of Russia for the world
championship. I wish he would be able to retain his title in this
championship.
I too started playing chess at age five. By now, I have been the
champion in lots of tournaments in Sri Lanka. I have won international
medals too. I study Carlsen’s chess games and learn from them. I wish to
be a world renowned chess player in the future.

How to save water
Water is very important because we can't live without it. There are
many ways we can save water. Don't cut trees but grow more saplings.
Don't keep the water tap open while washing because your water bill will
go up. Collect rain water. Don't waste water on unwanted purposes like
splashing while playing. We should not waste water but preserve it.
