Discussions to streamline waste management

The Ministry of Provincial Councils and Local government is currently carrying out discussions with several government authorities to implement a new cohesive waste management plan for all nine provinces.

According to the Media Secretary to the Ministry Amila Balasuriya the new plan will seek to further resolve various ongoing issues regarding improper waste management which has caused serious issues in certain localities.

¨Currently all provinces carry out different waste management plans¨ he said adding that the Minister of Provincial Councils and Local government Faiszer Mustapha has now instructed officials to formulate a systematic waste management plan for all provinces.

According to Balasuriya officials from the Central Environment Authority, Land Reclamation and Development Corporation and the Urban Development Authority along with Ministry officials are taking part in the ongoing discussions.

Early this week the Minister Mustapha announced that residential garbage in the country must be segregated from November in order for it to be collected. Mustapha claimed that garbage will not be collected if not segregated.
