Marketing - the key to local apparel industry

by Don Asoka Wijewardena

The Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) Professional Postgraduate Diploma in Apparel Marketing prepares students for complex market entry strategies, product distribution modes and effective marketing communication, said CIM Sri Lanka Region Chairman Suren Rajanathan at a media conference on CIM Professional Apparel Marketing Diploma at Hotel Hilton on Wednesday.

The CIM Professional Apparel Marketing program was a vital initiative in developing the generation of marketers whose challenge would be to ensure that the Sri Lanka apparel industry remained competitive in an increasingly competitive global playing field. He also said that the future of the local apparel industry would depend on marketing that was well informed and strategic.

Fifty-four students had successfully completed this diploma and currently seventy-four students had registered for apparel marketing exams.

Apparel Marketing Project Steering Committee Chairman Mahesh Amalean said that the high moral and ethical standards practised by the garment manufacturers locally had earned valuable benefits and concessions from the European Union.

As the apparel industry moved from a product-oriented backdrop to a more marketing-oriented environment, there was a strong need for qualified marketing professionals, he said.

Referring to the apparel diploma, Amalean said that the program had been especially designed to achieve flexibility so that students could specialise at the final stage and acquire indepth knowledge on general marketing and industry specific marketing within one qualification.

He also said that CIM graduates would then have attractive employment opportunities in a fast expanding apparel industry.

Head of Education CIM Sri Lanka Region Chitrangani Herat Gunaratne said that the course had been categorised into three key units Professional Certificate in Marketing (generic course), Professional Diploma in Marketing (generic course) and Professional Postgraduate Diploma in Apparel Marketing (apparel specific program).

Ms. Gunaratne said that candidates who qualify for this opportunity must be over eighteen and also possess at least two credit passes (one of which must be in English) at the GCE (O/L) examination. She said that further requirements would include either two passes at the GCE A/L examination, or one pass at the GCE A/L (UK) examinations. Candidates over nineteen could also apply, provided they also possess at least one year's work experience.
