Dilmah boutique teas win best award

by Jayampathy Jayasinghe

The top brands of Dilmah boutique teas such as Ceylon Oolong, Ceylon Souchong and Flowery Camellia have won the best and most innovative award at the world famous Anuga Fair in Cologne Germany recently.

Dilmah presented these teas at the Anuga Fair in Cologne. This is the first occasion where such teas were manufactured in Sri Lanka and it establishes the fact that Sri Lanka is a producer of quality teas in the world.

The Marketing Director, Dilmah, Dilan C. Fernando said that boutique teas from Sri Lanka sold in the international upmarket would enhance the image of Sri Lankan teas.

There is always a clamour for such teas when brand names become popular among people. But the tea industry in most western countries is dominated by multinationals promoting their own brand names. However, to salvage the local tea industry large quantities of quality teas have to be sold at a top price abroad, he said.

The Anuga Fair held every two years is an important event in the food industry that attracts over 160,000 visitors from 157 countries. The award winning teas were manufactured and supplied by the Handungoda Estate in Ahangama.

The Ceylon Oolong is considered by many experts as the most outstanding tea produced in the country. The Handungoda Estate in Ahangama has attracted foreign visitors to the country.

The plantation consist of tea, rubber and cinnamon with other spicy crops such as pepper, cloves and cardamoms.

The white tea -Ruhuna Imperial has won acclaim as the only white tea in the world untouched by hand. Visitors to the plantation are taken around on tour by experienced plantation managers and are given to sample catalogue teas. Visitors from Japan, UK, Germany, Australia, America, and France visit the estate to view the production of white tea.

The plantation arranges special tours for visiting groups of tourists to the estate.
