Royal Lotus pampers to your needs

by Surekha Galagoda

Would you like to read a book enjoying the cool breeze, watch monkeys at play or birds flying? Then the Royal Lotus would be ideal.

Nestled in Polonnaruwa spanning across five acres and overlooking the Giritale tank the hotel is owned by the Jinasena Group and was opened in 1976.

The huge pot at the entrance overflowing with water together with the warm smiles of the staff at the hotel makes you feel welcome and at home and rest assured they are always ready with a smile to pamper you and make you feel comfortable.

The hotel underwent a massive refurbishment in 2004 with an investment of Rs 10 million. It included a logo change, refurbishment of all its rooms, a new and warm look to the lobby and added facilities which includes a juice bar, said General Manager Horst Schmidtke. The hotel has 58 rooms including four chalets.

There are two types of rooms named Lotus and Deluxe. The Deluxe rooms and the suites in addition to all other facilities have a mini bar too.

The rooms are on three floors and each room has a private balcony where guests can enjoy a drink or engage in a discussion. Every room overlooks the Giritale tank and just sitting there watching the calmness of the water in the tank will make all your worries vanish.

It is said that the Giritale tank is the deepest tank (43 feet) in the country.

The hotel has a playground with all facilities for the children.

Assistant Manager Jan Dirckze said that the hotel specialises in Sri Lankan cuisine while they also serve western dishes. The mouth-watering dishes prepared by Chef O. A. Piyasena ably helped by his staff makes your tastebuds titilate. There is a wide choice of desserts for you to enjoy.

The guests can select the buffet or the set menu according to their choice as we want our guests to feel comfortable, happy and take away happy memories. The hotel has two restaurants, the poolside restaurant and the Golden Sheaf.

The Golden Sheaf is airconditioned and can accommodate eighty persons and whereever you sit you can enjoy the beautiful view of the Giritale Tank.

The Guardstone Bar close to the lobby area is airconditioned but if you prefer to have a drink enjoying the natural breeze then the choice should be the poolside bar.

Water lovers can also have a dip in the pool at any time of the day as there are no restrictions on pool timings. So when you visit Royal Lotus don't forget your swim suits because you can swim to your heart's content. The conference hall which has all facilities can accommodate thirty five persons, Dirckze said.

The Ayurvedic spa at the hotel offers all treatment be it head massage, body massage, steam bath other than the Sauna. The guests who visit the Royal Lotus can make use of the adjoining Angsana Spa. Nature lovers and lovers of archaeology can enjoy the tours organised by the Mahout Adventures Pvt Ltd.

They have experienced guides on each subject be it visiting National Parks, Bird watching, cyling or studying about reptiles in the Mahout Adventures Pvt Ltd. It is also a member of the Jinasena Group.

The hotel has a laundry service, room service and a Doctor on call 24 hours of the day. The hotel also has a Jewellery shop and a souvenir shop in the hotel premises for the convenience of its guests. The hotel was set up in 1976 with 54 rooms. Today it has 58 rooms and 48 staffers.

He praised all his staff and added that their dedicated service and commitment was key to the success of the hotel and what it is today. Speaking of future plans Dirckze said that they are planning to build a banquet hall so that they can cater to the ever increasing wedding market.
