Asian Junior Rugby : Sri Lanka win, lose

Sri Lanka suffered a 13-38 defeat at the hands of defending champions South Korea in the first-round, but in the following round did exceptionally well to beat Kazakhastan 21-5 at the Junior (under -19) Asian Rugby Championships now in progress in Lahore, Pakistan.

The Lankans are co-sponsored by Singer (Sri Lanka) Limited and were down, to play Thailand in the third-round, and if they do win this game, will figure in the "Play off" game for the third place with the winners of the Chinese Taipei Vs Malaysia match.

If Sri Lanka does beat either Chinese Taipei or Malaysia, they will book a place to play in the 2006 Rugby Youth World Cup to be staged in Dubai.

In the other first-round games, Japan beat Chinese Taipei 41-0, Kazankhastan beat Thailand 17-12, Malaysia beat Arabian Gulf 12-7, while India beat Pakistan 31-0. Then in the second-round, South Korea beat Thailand 43-0, Japan beat Malaysia 48-12, Chinese Taipei beat Arabian Gulf 41-0, while Pakistan beat Brunei 14-5.
