Lanka to tap India for electricity

Power and Energy Minister W. D. J. Seneviratne told the `Sunday Observer' that Sri Lanka expects to obtain electricity from Madurai in India via Talimannar.

A CEB delegation will leave for India next month to hold discussions in this connection with the Indian Government.

"A distribution plant will be set up in Anuradhapura," he said.

The Minister also said that under this project about 500 to 1000 mw will be purchased from India and the objective is to provide expanding electricity for industries and other development projects in the country.

Minister Seneviratne also said that the local electricity consumption has significantly increased during the past three years due to the new development ventures initiated by the Government.

"However, the concept of setting up new power plants in the country including Norochcholai and Upper Kothmale will be carried out continuously,".
