With an impressive cast consisting of Dilrukshi Fonseka, Shanuki De
Alwis, Michelle Herft, Mario De Soysa, Amesh De Silva and Zahabiya
Adamaly, the stage of ‘Stormy Weather’ is sure to strike lightning
chords with theatre-goers.
According to the production’s official page, the cast is preparing
for the shoot of the movie sections of the play with their Film Partners
Suren and Video Image who are gurus in the business.
The storyboards and animatics are complete and the film sequences are
in pre-production which will make this film noir concept a thrilling
one.
Speaking to Sunday Observer magazine, director and writer of the play
Jehan Aloysius said it is cunningly wicked ‘whodunit’, presented in the
style of the black and white murder mysteries of the 1940s and 1950s
cinema technique of Film Noir. “Literally translated as Dark Cinema’,
this style of movie making first came out during just after the great
depression in the United States and continued to the 1950’s. The
characters are gritty and flawed, while the plots often revolved around
a murder mystery and investigation where the protagonist would generally
be the investigator.
Our show uses a cinematic technique with a non-linear narrative
structure that is very much in the lines of Film Noir, though I must
add, that the play was not originally with Film Noir in mind,” he said.
Jehan enlightened us a little on the play without spilling the beans,
“Noel Richards, a man with few friends is found dead in his bed one
morning with multiple stab wounds to his neck and chest. A nameless
inspector summons Noel’s wife, sister and lover to find the Noel’s
killer, but discovers that each of these women seems to have secrets and
motives.
The question is which of them had the greatest motive. The unwelcome
arrival of a storm doesn’t help the investigation. To find out who
killed Noel Richards, and if they’ll attempt to do it a second time,
you’ll need to check the drama out”.
Mentioning the aim of directing a production like this, Jehan said,
“I always believe in trying out new ideas and creating new experiences
for audiences”.
The play presented by Centre Stage Productions, will go on the boards
at the Punchi Theatre Borella from September to 10 13. |
