and Home Affairs Minister Dr. Sarath Amunugama represented
the President Mahinda Rajapaksa at the G-20 Chair
Consultation of Low Income Country Ministers organised by
the Bretton Woods Institution, held recently at the Holiday

Haul of LTTE ammo recovered
The Sri Lanka Army unearthed more than 147,000 rounds of ammunition
buried by the LTTE, late last week in the Army's extensive clearing
operations continuing in the recently liberated areas. According to
Military Spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara, there were 114,000
rounds of 0.45 pistol ammunition, 27,990 rounds of 5.56 rifle ammunition
and 5,360 rounds of 23mm ammunition recovered from the Puthukuduirrippu
area.
In addition, 56 sets of 1077 man pack communication sets, 22 sets of
1,077 handsets, eight 9600 handheld communication sets and four
'spectra' base communication sets were found by the troops, in
Kuppilankulam in Mullaitivu.
Bar Association condemns...
The Bar Association of Sri Lanka has expressed its shock over the
numerous instances of police brutality against unarmed civilians, in
particular the killing of two youth by police officers attached to the
Angulana Police Station last week and the violent attack on a young
student of the Sri Lanka Institute of Technology in Malabe in the
previous week by a team of police officers.Whilst condemning these acts
of brutality and violence with the greatest vehemence at its command,
the Bar Association emphasizes that these acts of violence have caused
revulsion amongst society.
The Bar Association calls upon the Government to take immediate steps
to prevent the recurrence of such acts.
Remembering T. B. Subasingha
T. B. Subasingha was an honest politician who always thought in terms
of the emancipation of the poor said the Minister of Mass Media,
Information, Enterprise Development and Investment Promotion, Anura
Priyadarshana Yapa.
He said that Subasingha rendered an invaluable service to his
motherland during his multi-faceted career which spanned over four
decades.
Subasingha donated his inherited wealth to the needy of Wayamba. As
Industries and Scientific Affairs Minister he was able to bring changes
in the Industrial Policy of Sri Lanka.
He made a noteworthy contribution to the political advancement and
the social emancipation of Sri Lankans, he said.
"As a youth leader, social worker, diplomat and Parliamentarian he
gave his best for the country and to the people of Bingiriya and
Katugampola" he said.
A series of commemoration ceremonies to mark the late T. B.
Subasingha commenced yesterday at Pannala, Kurunegala, organised by T.
B. Subasingha Commemoration Foundation.
A special commemoration meeting under the patronage of Prime Minister
Ratnasiri Wickramanayaka will be held on August 29 at Pannala Praja
Salawa.

'Techno 2009' at BMICH
The Institution of Engineers Sri Lanka (IESL), will hold its 24th
annual exhibition at the BMICH, from 09th to 11th October.
The prestigious "Techno 2009" exhibition which marks the flagship
event in the IESL calendar, will seek to unleash and elicit
multi-faceted disciplines, talents and skills in various spheres of
engineering.
Over the past 23 years, "Techno" exhibition has undoubtedly
maintained the highest quality standards. It has been widely accepted
within the engineering fraternity that "Techno" is one of the best and
leading exhibitions in the sphere of Engineering and Technology, in this
part of the globe.
The "Techno 2008", had been a stunning success, with over 230 stalls
and an encouraging number of visitors to view them. It is envisaged to
make it a more memorable event this year. It will comprise special
features such as, the IESL Engineering Pavilion, 'Vidatha' Exhibition in
collaboration with the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Robot
competition organized by the IESL's IT Sectional Committee, the Junior
Inventors' Area in association with the JIY Committee of the IESL and
the special area, the 'Sri Lankan Zone', for Mawbima Lanka Foundation,
among others.
A special and significant feature of the "Techno 2009", would be an
endeavour to establish stronger, dynamic and sustainable links between
the suppliers of engineering products and services, and the relevant
government institutions, with a view to facilitate mutual awareness of
their resources and potential.
Established in 1906 and incorporated by an act of Parliament, as the
apex engineering body in Sri Lanka, the IESL, currently has over 10,000
corporate and associate members on its roll. Its membership which
possesses diverse engineering and scientific skills, is engaged in mega
development projects island wide, both in the public and private
sectors. |
