Upsets galore at Under-15 hockey tourney
S.M. Jiffrey Abdeen – Kandy Sports Corr.
Upsets continued to dominate the third day of the all island schools
under-15 girls and boys hockey championship organised by the Sri Lanka
Schools Hockey Association and played at Edward Park and Bernand
Aluvihare Stadium, Matale yesterday.
A major upset was witnessed when Prince of Wales College, Moratuwa
beat the local giants St. Thomas College Matale 2-0 on penalty strokes
after the match had ended in a scoreless draw.
This performance by the young Cambrian stickers is laudable as very
little hockey is played at Moratuwa when compared to Matale which is
dubbed as the cradle of hockey in Sri Lanka.
In another upset St. Aloysius College beat a former champion Christ
Church College Matale 2-0 on penalty strokes.
In a surprise turn of events Vijaya College, Matale, received a walk
over from Trinity College, Kandy who failed to turn up on time for the
Pre-quarter match.
They were nearly two hours late and by that time the organisers had
awarded a walk over for the Vijayans and also two matches had been
completed and there was no way the Trinitians could be accommodated and
they had to bow cut of the boys championship.
This tournament has reached the semi-final stage and the girls
schools which have qualified are. |
