44 million MT iron ore deposit in Buttala
A discussion was held recently at the Ministry of Industrial Development regarding the iron ore deposit of around 44 million metric tonnes in Buttala in the Moneragala district. Industrial Development Minister Kumar Welgama took part in a tour recently to explore the possibility of manufacturing iron from the Buttala Iron ore as an industry on the instructions of President Mahinda Rajapaksa. (Above) the Minister examines a sample of iron ore. Addl. Secretary of the Ministry R. V. D. Piyathilake and Director Epa Dayaratne look on. (Below) Prof. Athula Senarathne of the Geological Science Unit who has researched in this regard and produced iron out of Buttala iron ore briefs Industrial Development Minister Kumara Welgama, Ministry Secretary Jayampathi Hettiarachchi and other Ministry officials on his findings.

Gamidiriya rural development a roaring success

Gamidiriya, the community development and livelihood improvement project would be the most successful story in rural development in Sri Lanka, said the CEO of the project P. Batuwitage. One-and-a-half years after the implementation of the project we can now see the results and they are impressive, he said.

NCED tea cluster draws up 10-year plan to boost industry

The Tea Cluster of the National Council for Economic Development is developing a 10-year plan for the tea industry proposed by the stakeholders of the industry which includes the Ceylon Tea Traders' Association, regional plantation companies, stockbrokers, private tea factory owners, Sri Lanka Tea Board, members of the plantation industry and the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, Executive Director NCED, Rohantha Athukorala said.

Local travel trade opposes move to sell airline tickets in US dollars

The local travel trade grouped together for the first time, to oppose a move by airlines to sell tickets in Sri Lanka in US dollars, bypassing the Sri Lanka Rupee. A section of airlines intends the move to come into force, on October 1. Travails of such a move will dispense of travel agent services and cut out traveller/agent companionship.
