A farce at inaugural 'Big match'

CRICKET: The inaugural Big Match between D.S.Senanayake College and Mahanama ended in an uneventful draw at the R. Premadasa Stadium yesterday.

Mahanama with a 109 run lead with 5 wickets in hand and only the 15 mandatory overs remaining the match was as good as over.

D.S.Senanayake College opting to field first justified their decision by restricting Mahanama for 157 in their first innings. But Mahanama hit back in similar fashion through their medium pacer Hasitha de silva who took 4 for 37.

The Senanayakians who were 61 for 2 overnight reached their final score of 151 mainly due to an useful innings of 65 by Lahiru Weragala who struck 8 fours and faced 186 deliveries. He batted withoput much support from the other end as wickets tumbled at regular intervals as Hasitha de Silva did most of the damage.

For 'DS' Weragala was ninth man out as they fell short by 6 runs to obtain a first innings lead.

Mahanama going in for the second time were given a reasonable start putting on 33 runs with Ravindu Jayatissa (28) doing the bulk of the scoring. But it was Sujith Rubera who steadied the innings with an unbeaten 34 and took Mahanama to their final destination of 127 for 8 at close.
