St. Benedict's u.19 champs
FOOTBALL: St. Benedict's College won the under-19 division one soccer
title defeating Zahira College, Maradana by 2 goals to 1 in the final
played at the Anuradhapura Stadium on January 8. The three-day 2006 main
tournament was conducted by the Sri Lanka Schools Football Association.
Eight teams participated in the division one tourney and in the
semi-finals Bens beat De Mazenod College, Kandana 3-1 while Zahira
defeated St. Joseph's College 2-0.
De Mazenod defeated Josephians 9-1 to take the third place while Joes
were placed fourth.
M. Imitaz of Zahira College was selected as the Best Player in the
division one while Dexter Anthony Bernard was picked as the Best
Goalkeeper.
The under-19 division two tournament was won by Ananda College who
beat St. Anne's College, Kurunegela 3-2 in the final.
St. Peter's College took third place with a 3-2 win over St.
Anthony's College, Wattala.
P. M. D. Ekanayake of St. Anne's College was picked as the Best
Player and S. S. S. Dharmasiri of Ananda was the Best Goalkeeper.
Div 3
Dharmaloka College, Kelaniya won the division three tournament
defeating Seevali College, Ratnapura on a penalty shoot-out 3-2 after
the final ended in a nil-all draw.
Chanaka Chathuranga of Seevali College and Niroshan Pradeep of
Dharmaloka College received the awards for Best Player and Best
Goalkeeper of division three tournament.
Meanwhile two special awards were presented to Tejan Fernando of St.
Benedict's College who was a member of the Sri Lanka Football team which
won the silver at the 10th South Asian Games and Dexter Anthony Bernard
of St. Benedict's College who represented Sri Lanka Schools at the 34th
Asian Schools Soccer Championships held in Vietnam and was adjudged the
Best Goalkeeper of the championships.
