Nano technology will enhance economic growth - Tissa Witharana

Research technology, especially nano technology should be developed for commercial use.

Minister of Science and Technology Prof. Tissa Vitharana said that acquiring competence in Nano technology will enhance economic growth.

The minister who was the chief guest at the Sixth Achiever of Industrial Excellence 2007, organised by the Ceylon National Chamber of Industries said that the gap between the rich and poor countries and the disparities within the countries are also widening.

"The market has changed completely and protection of local industries is disappearing. We also have to face tough competition which is a great challenge to our entrepreneurs. At present industrialists have to face a difficult task due to cost of electricity, he said.

"We cannot depend on foreign direct investment, instead the resources of our own small and medium enterprises have to be developed, he said.

Ceylon National Chamber of Industries (CNCI) chairman A.K. Ratnaraja said that the policy of the chamber is to encourage industrialists to operate as globally competitive enterprises notwithstanding the ever-changing world environment. The criteria and marking scheme of the CNCI Achiever of Industrial excellence awards must become the benchmark and stand the scrutiny of all, he said.

The chairman, panel of judges and chairman and MD-Dankotuwa Porcelain Ltd. Sunil G. Wijesingha said that with increasing globalisation and the increasing demands from customers, survival and growth will only be possible if companies seriously improve strategies to innovate and adapt to the new environment.

Implementing changes in the organisation to comform to the requirements of this competition can have a tremendous positive impact on the performance of the company, he said.
