Thoppigala capture explodes myths
No 'North and East conflict', says JHU
by Shanika Sriyananda
The Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) said that with the capture of
Thoppigala there is no conflict called the 'North and East Conflict' in
the country and it would be better to call it the 'Northern Conflict'.
Deputy Secretary of the JHU Udaya Gammanpila told the 'Sunday
Observer' that liberating the East was a significant victory in the
country's recent history and it led to dispel several myths related to
the conflict.
"The East is not the East, which we saw before the Ceasefire
Agreement", he said adding that the government was duty-bound to
liberate the people in the North from the so-called 'liberator'.
Gammanpila said that the Tamils of the North were also eagerly
awaiting the Armed forces to liberate them from the terrorists'
clutches. According to Gammanpila, several myths have been exploded with
the liberation of the East. "Earlier people thought that the national
problem cannot be solved without going for a federal system.
But it has been proved that the Tamils who suffered under the LTTE
needs peace. When the Sri Lankan military entered the liberated areas
they flocked around the army", he said.
He said that it was proved that the LTTE's views were not reflected
in the aspirations of the ordinary Tamils who had been forcibly held in
the LTTE controlled areas and used as human shields in the war.
"It has also been proved that the LTTE had stockpiled weapons to
strengthen their power under the cover of the CFA", he said.
