ASP promotion shortly
by Jayampathy Jayasinghe
The National Police Commission (NPC) will soon call for applications
from Chief Inspectors of Police who are confirmed in their posts with
five years service to be selected as Assistant Superintendents of Police
(ASPs), NPC sources told the 'Sunday Observer'.
The number of Chief Inspectors who will be summoned for interviews
with regard to merit promotions will be five times the number of
vacancies available in the cadre. Where Merit Promotions are concerned
there will only be a Viva Voce for candidates who will be exempted from
a written examination. The promotions will be made on 50 percent
seniority and 50 percent merit basis.
One of the prerequisites is to have an unblemished record of service
for eligibility for promotions. Fifty percent of the vacancies for ASPs
will be filled from the Chief Inspectorate. However, where limited
competition is concerned, 25 percent of the ASP vacancies will be filled
from graduate Chief Inspectors with ten years service. They will be
required to sit for a written examination and also to face a Viva Voce.
Meanwhile, a batch of direct ASPs will be recruited after they sit
the competitive examination conducted by the Examinations Department.
