Horror accident overshadows Powell's winning return

ATHLETICS: ROME, July 14, 2007 - World record holder Asafa Powell won the Rome Golden League 100m here on Friday but the meeting was overshadowed by a freak accident which left a French long jumper speared by a wayward javelin.

Powell, who missed the Paris leg of the Golden League series because of a groin injury, cruised to victory at the Olympic Stadium in 9.90sec edging out form runner Derrick Atkins of the Bahamas who was second in 10.02.

But the night will be remembered for the horror injury suffered by long jumper Salim Sdiri who was accidentally hit by a javelin thrown by Finland's Tero Pitkamaki. The 28-year-old Sdiri, a bronze medallist at the 2007 European indoor championships, collapsed to the ground before being taken to hospital. "Sdiri had a 4cm injury in his right side," said Giuseppe Fischetto, one of the medics at the scene.
